> No Download option, a Reel saved without sound, or a file that never reaches your gallery: the nine common causes and the fix for each on iPhone and Android.

## Key takeaways

- The Download option is missing when the account is private, the creator turned downloads off, or the account holder is under 18 with the default setting.
- A Reel that saves without sound usually uses a licensed song that Instagram removes from the downloaded copy.
- If nothing saves at all, check Instagram's Photos permission and the phone's free storage.
- Files downloaded in Safari go to the Files app, not Photos, until you use Share → Save Video.

When an Instagram Reel will not save, the cause is nearly always one of three things: the creator's settings do not allow it, Instagram is stripping the music, or your phone is not letting the file through. Find your symptom in the table, then jump to the fix.

| What you see | Most likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No **Download** option in the share menu | Private account, or downloads turned off | [Fix 1](#1-there-is-no-download-option) |
| Reel saved, but silent | Licensed music removed | [Fix 2](#2-the-reel-saved-without-sound) |
| Your own draft saves without music | Library song in the draft | [Fix 3](#3-your-own-reel-or-draft-saves-without-music) |
| "Unable to save" or nothing happens | Photo permission or storage | [Fixes 4](#4-instagram-is-not-allowed-to-save-to-photos) and [5](#5-your-phone-is-out-of-storage) |
| Downloaded in a browser, not in gallery | File is in Files or Downloads | [Fix 6](#6-the-file-downloaded-but-is-not-in-your-gallery) |
| Downloader cannot fetch the link | Wrong, private, or deleted link | [Fix 7](#7-the-downloader-says-it-cannot-fetch-the-link) |

## 1. There is no Download option

Instagram shows **Download** in the share menu only when all of these are true:

- the account is **public**,
- the creator has left **downloads enabled** for their Reels,
- the account holder is not under 18 with the default setting, which is off.

You cannot change someone else's setting. If the Reel is public, though, you can still save it **by link**: tap *Copy link*, paste it into the [Instagram Reels Downloader](https://reelsdl.net/), and download the MP4. If the account is private, there is no workaround. Ask the creator for the file.

If the missing option is on **your own** Reels, open Instagram's settings, find the Reels sharing and reuse options, and switch on **Allow people to download your reels**.

## 2. The Reel saved without sound

This is the most common complaint, and it is not a bug. When a Reel uses a song from Instagram's music library, the copy that Instagram's Download button produces can have the audio removed. The licence covers playback in the app, not a file on your phone.

**Fix:** download the Reel by link. The file you get from the [Reels downloader](https://reelsdl.net/) is the video as it plays on Instagram, sound included. Step-by-step instructions are in [how to save Reels in your gallery with music](https://reelsdl.net/blog/save-instagram-reels-in-gallery-with-music).

Before you blame the file, rule out the simple thing: the Photos app on iPhone plays videos muted until you tap the speaker icon.

## 3. Your own Reel or draft saves without music

When you tap the download arrow in the Reels editor, Instagram tells you the video will be saved without its music if you used a library track. Drafts have no public link, so a downloader cannot help either.

What works:

- **Record or add the sound yourself.** Original audio and voice-overs are kept.
- **Finish the edit outside Instagram** with music you are allowed to use, and upload the exported file. You already have the complete copy.
- **Publish, then download by link** if your account is public. Afterwards you can archive the Reel if you did not mean to keep it up.

## 4. Instagram is not allowed to save to Photos

If saving does nothing at all, or you get "Unable to save", check the permission.

- **iPhone:** *Settings → Apps → Instagram → Photos*. Pick any option other than *None*, which blocks every save.
- **Android:** *Settings → Apps → Instagram → Permissions → Photos and videos*. Set it to **Allow**.

Close Instagram completely, reopen it, and try again.

## 5. Your phone is out of storage

A Reel is small, but a phone with a few megabytes free will refuse to save anything, usually without a clear message.

- **iPhone:** *Settings → General → iPhone Storage*.
- **Android:** *Settings → Storage*.

Free up at least a few hundred megabytes. Clearing old downloads and offloading unused apps is usually enough.

## 6. The file downloaded but is not in your gallery

Browsers do not save into the gallery directly.

- **iPhone:** Safari puts downloads in **Files → Downloads**. Open the video, tap **Share**, then **Save Video**.
- **Android:** the file is in the **Download** folder. In Google Photos look under *Collections → On this device*; in Samsung Gallery look under *Albums*. If it is still missing, open it once from the Files app.

## 7. The downloader says it cannot fetch the link

Go through this list in order:

1. **Is it the right kind of link?** It should contain `/reel/`, `/reels/`, or `/p/`. A profile link (`instagram.com/username`) will not work.
2. **Is the account public?** Open the link in a private browser window where you are not logged in. If Instagram asks you to log in to see it, it is not public.
3. **Does the Reel still exist?** Deleted and archived Reels return nothing.
4. **Is it region- or age-restricted?** Some Reels are hidden from logged-out visitors. These behave like private posts.
5. **Try again in a minute.** Instagram occasionally rate-limits requests. A second attempt often works.

## 8. Instagram itself is misbehaving

If Reels will not save, load, or play at all:

- **Update Instagram** from the App Store or Play Store. Save and download features change often.
- **Restart the app**, then the phone.
- **Clear the cache on Android:** *Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear cache*. On iPhone, the equivalent is deleting and reinstalling the app. Your drafts are stored on the device, so save or post them first.
- **Check for an outage.** If friends have the same problem, wait it out.

## 9. Low Power Mode and weak connections

Battery saver modes pause background downloads, and a weak connection can leave a save stuck partway. Switch to Wi-Fi, turn off Low Power Mode or Battery Saver for a moment, and keep Instagram or the browser open until the download finishes.

## Still stuck?

For a public Reel, the link method avoids nearly every problem above, because it does not depend on the creator's download setting, Instagram's music rules, or the app's photo permission:

1. Copy the Reel link.
2. Paste it at [reelsdl.net](https://reelsdl.net/).
3. Download the MP4.

On a computer the same steps apply; see [how to download Instagram Reels on a laptop or PC](https://reelsdl.net/blog/download-instagram-reels-on-laptop-pc-mac). ## Frequently asked questions

### Why is there no Download option on some Instagram Reels?

The Download option only appears for Reels from public accounts whose owners allow downloads. It is missing when the account is private, when the creator switched downloads off, or when the account belongs to someone under 18 and still has the default setting.

### Why did my Instagram Reel save without sound?

Instagram can remove the audio from a downloaded Reel when it uses a licensed song from Instagram's music library. Download the public Reel by link instead to keep the sound that plays on Instagram.

### Why won't my Reel draft save to the camera roll?

Check that Instagram has permission to add to your photos and that your phone has free storage. If the draft uses a song from Instagram's library, it can only be saved without that music.

### I downloaded a Reel on iPhone but it is not in Photos. Where is it?

Files downloaded in Safari go to the Downloads folder in the Files app. Open the video there, tap Share, then Save Video to copy it to the camera roll.

### Can I save a Reel from a private Instagram account?

No. Private Reels cannot be downloaded in the app or by link. The only way to get the video is to ask the creator to send it to you.
